Strength in Fragility: How Flowers and Feminine Strength Inspired My Latest Paintings
Coming up... Mother's Day and York Open Studios
Welcome to the bi-weekly newsletter, Notes of a Painter.
In the previous issue, I talked about how pregnancy has influenced my most recent work. Today, I want to share the origins of my floral work and the influences that shaped its development.
I first connected with the subject of flowers in June 2024 while preparing for my wedding. There was a lot of flower research going on for decorations and bouquets, and it made me think of the 17th-century Dutch florals I’d seen in galleries, including the National Gallery, London and The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

This connection became a beautiful way to expand my ideas, develop my painting technique, and share my vulnerability—something I continue to challenge myself on. A flower may seem fragile, delicate, and decorative, yet it can push through cracks in the pavement, survive in harsh weather, and thrive against the odds for generations. There’s a quiet power in that.
There’s also a deep meaning and energy to my work that I love exploring. Just like a flower, we’re more resilient than we appear. We heal, take time to grow, and, if needed, can even poison.

This idea has become a huge part of my latest paintings. Inspired by the beauty and depth of 17th-century Dutch flower paintings, they have a modern, abstract twist—a reminder of how timeless themes can evolve. Here’s a sneak peek at something new:
