The month began with a gloomy uncertain feel. I had just been made redundant and was wondering what comes next. I made the most of the timing, as I had York Open Studios coming up and it gave me space to sort out the last finishing touches.
Easter bank holiday
For Easter, we escaped the noise of uncertainty and headed to Robin Hoods Bay on the North Yorkshire Coast. It was a beautiful weekend with friends and my first time staying in my partner's camper van. It was just what I need, time away in nature with friends, to breathe, so that I could embrace the challenges of a busy month ahead.
York Open Studios kicked off on Friday 14 April. In true British fashion, the weather was awful but the people of York came out in their winter gear ready to start a weekend of celebrating art. I felt nervous for the public to see my work for the first time. It was different showing it at University in the safe space of artists and lecturers who had an understanding of art history and in the meaning behind the work. How would the public who know nothing about me see my work? As the people of York piled through the doors I was put at ease. The feedback I had Friday was incredible and so supportive. They embraced it and had some wonderful comments and questions. I began to enjoy the evening and looked forward to what the rest of the weekend would bring.
Open Studios continued and I sold a number of pieces including ‘Daydreamer, 2022’ and ‘Courageous, 2022’. The original oil studies on paper did well, as they were under £100 and this was the first time I was showing publicly it gave people a chance to embrace my work.

I’m incredibly grateful for this event. For the sales, but also the confidence it has given me to continue making my work and push boundaries.
Birthday Girl
Some of you may know that April is the start of a new year for me as it’s on the 27th it’s my birthday (Yes, I’m Taurus). A month ago I was nervous and not ready to turn 35, but now, everything began falling into place.
I had a couple of leads on jobs and work to support my practice, which I will know more about in next month’s newsletter.
I celebrated my birthday with a trip to Helmsley and a walk on the moors nearby. I then had a party with friends and family.
I finished the month with a bank holiday weekend in Hornsea a lovely place by the sea I visit often. A trip to the coast was a great bookend to start and finish the month. I felt ready to embrace the changes and to see what May had to offer.
